The happenings within Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are getting more interesting with serious machinations, afoot, to kick out the loquacious incumbent Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, of office.
At the party regional congress, Wednesday, there were signals that Mr. Antwi-Boasiako, popularly called ‘Chairman Wontumi’, was already a spent-force and people want him out.
One thing that was running through the delegates at the congress grounds, was the fact that the NPP structures in its strongest region, have been extremely weak with visible cracks in the party.
Hints picked up at the congress grounds have it that, the Ashanti Region has been operating on what is termed ‘We and Them’ lines, as some persons in the region do no longer have a say, in the party.
With the imminent exit staring in the face of Mr. Boasiako, noted for coarseness in political discourses, he was heard asking for a clean campaign towards the search for officers who would be able to handle the NPP in the future.
This humble plea of Chairman Wontumi, however, ruffled feathers and consequently incurred angry retorts at the congress, with those wanting to see his back, poking fun at him that he was not the best person to call for decency in campaigning.
Already, a former Presiding Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Abraham Boadi, has been on Mr. Boasiako’s issue, and making damning claims against the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman.
To Mr. Boadi, Mr. Boasiako has set the record for being the first person to ever lead the party at the regional level for two consecutive terms “and he needs to preserve that legacy by not contesting in the upcoming regional elections.”
“Chairman Wontumi is not in the race for the party chairmanship in the Ashanti Region. If Wontumi is someone who listens to advice, he will bow out of the race gracefully. He has made history by being the first to be chairman for two terms straight.
He should enjoy the glories of his leadership and not contest for the chairmanship or rather vie for the 2nd National Vice-Chair position of the party,” he told Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.
Although he is a friend of Wontumi, Abraham Boadi indicated that information on the grounds indicates that he (Wontumi) will lose the chairmanship race.
According to him, the movers and shakers of the party in the region are currently supporting Wontumi’s number one contender, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah. “Wontumi has no MP or Chairman backing him. These are the shakers and movers of the party in the region and Odeneho is now leading the race.”
Another person, Lawrence Adu, former Polling Station Chairman of Subin Constituency in Ashanti Region, also has some terrible issues with Mr. Boasiako.
“We don’t have a leader in the Ashanti Region and that is a fact. We don’t have a leader in the region and that is our problem,” he declared.
Asked if the popular Ashanti Regional Chairman, Wontumi, did not fit the profile of party leader in the region, he cried out, “He is not a chairman. To become a chairman one has to make sure the party, whilst in power, will do more than is expected of them by the region. You have to ensure we enjoy a high level of development but Wontumi is just being glorified in the region and nothing else.”
According to him, the people in the Ashanti Region are mad at the NPP because they have not received their fair share of development “and this is because the party’s leadership in the region is not working. They are not lobbying to get us the development required.”
In an interview on the Epa Hoa Daben Political talk show aired on Happy98.9FM and hosted by Don Kwabena Prah, Lawrence Adu intimated, “Floods have hit the Kumasi Central Market and several other places in the region and that is affecting us but what has the regional chair of the party done? Instead of ensuring this is fixed, he has done nothing.”
Commenting on the upcoming Ashanti Regional Delegates Conference, he admitted that Chairman Wontumi will not retain his position because “he is not a listening leader.
Political gurus who are lacing their boots to lead the NPP in the Ashanti region as regional chairpersons, to ready NPP to recapture power in election 2024 include, the incumbent chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako (Chairman Wontumi), Mr. Owusu Aduomi, a former member of parliament for Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti region and former Deputy Minister of Roads, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Constituency Chairman, Afigya Kwabre South, Mr. Boris B, among others.
