The Queenmother of the Okuapeman Traditional Area, in the Eastern Region, Nana Afua Nketia Obuo II, made a mistake by trusting some of the Divisional Chiefs of the area in her quest to ensure that the rightful person was enstooled as the successor to the late Oseadeeyo Nana Addo Dankwa III.
Unknown to the Queenmother, some of the divisional and prominent chiefs in Akwapim had already sold their conscience to the government for goodies from the Presidency and were spying on her.
Shockingly, those dishonest chiefs were by the side of the Queenmother in almost all the crucial decisions she took in making sure that the rightful person ascends the Okuapeman stool.
Nana Obuo II was reported severally to the Presidency by the very chiefs she counted on to uphold the truth and the known Akuapem honest way of doing things.
It is now clear the government had a hand in getting Odehye Kwadwo Kesse Antwi, now Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, enstooled as the Okuapemhene.
The Presidency assigned one of its directors who hails from Akropong to ensure Odehye Antwi was enstooled, amidst all the commotion and confusion in the otherwise peaceful area.
Shamefully on the part of some of the chiefs of the area, they accepted goodies from the Presidency and went against the laid down customs and traditions that go with the installation and enstoolment of Okuapemhene.
The Queenmother, on all occasions, had been resolute in her position that Odehye Antwi was not the rightful heir to the Okuapeman throne.
It was the Queenmother’s realization of the betrayal and dishonest acts involving some of the Akuapem chiefs that angered her to sack emissaries from the Presidency who wanted to appease her with some huge number of rams, Schnapps’ and other goodies.
What is laughable was the fact that the Presidency felt that once they had been able to bribe certain key chiefs and leaders in the area, the Queenmother could also be bribed.
As a matter of fact, some of the chiefs were reporting the Queenmother directly to the Presidency over her actions to ensure that the right thing was done in connection with the Okuapeman chieftaincy issues.
The emissaries, including the National Security Minister, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, and the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, were hooted at when the Okuapemhemaa rejected the goodies that were meant to appease her.
There is huge tension at Akropong after Odehye Antwi was installed as the Okuapemhene on May 1, 2020 with full support from state security apparatus.
The area is on a time bomb that could detonate anytime soon, but because of the interest of the government in the whole game plan, the state security officials are playing the Ostrich and behaving everything is fine at Akropong.
In anticipation of what is likely to happen, although Odehye Antwi has been enstooled and recognized in certain quarters as the Okuapemhene, security operatives have stationed permanently at Akropong, the traditional capital of Akuapem.
The government, after bullying and bulldozing its way in the Okuapeman Stool Affairs, sneaked to Akropong to beg Nana Obuo II for disrespecting her, and further pleaded with her to withdraw an Appeal she is pursing at the National House of Chiefs.
The Queenmother, The Inquisitor gathered, would not cave in to the government’s sweet talk and went further to expose the clandestine moves.
What is visible is the fact that the current Okuapemhene will not be able to work in harmony with the Queenmother and that has heightened the already volatile situation at Akropong.
Nana Obuo II enjoys massive respect and support from the youth of Akuapem for her hard stand on who should be Okuapemhene.
Events after the decision of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs annulling the enstoolment of Odehye Kwasi Akuffo as the Okuapemhene would have sparked a huge commotion at Akropong, but for the level-headedness of some of the parties within the Sakyeabea Royal Family.
After state security forces were used in all the activities involving the moves to have Odeheye Kwadwo Kesse as the Okuapemhene, with those heavily involved going contrary protocols being observed in the midst of the dreaded COVID-19, some prominent chiefs have been fingered in a bribery scandal.
Some of the chiefs involved in the grimy game had just last week vowed not to be part of the process, but suddenly made u-turns and were heavily involved in the steps to enstool Odehye Kwadwo Kesse.
So cluttered were the moves to have Odehye Kwadwo Kesse enstooled that there were fears that Akropong, traditional headquarters of Akuapem, would explode in the future, as tempers are still high over the manner the Queenmother was being treated.
After the House of Chiefs’ ruling, the security forces, under the instructions of some heavyweights in government, defied the ban on public gathering because of the COVID-19 pandemic and guarded the installation of Odehye Kwadwo Kesse.
Social distancing was not observed at the illegal gathering and there are fears that the deadly bug would spread in the area soon.
What is intriguing is the fact that basic customary practices that go with such important exercise were thrown to the dogs.
The people of the area are mindful of past events, as security agencies were, in 1993, overwhelmed with the kind of arms that were used in a land tussle between the people of Akropong and Abirew
