John Dumelo advocates for a 5-year presidential term

Actor and politician John Dumelo, is advocating that instead of a four year presidential term, the duration be increased to five.

According to the failed 2020 National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon in the Greater Accra Region, the current four years is too short a time for any president to perform.

He explained that in the four years, a leader has to use the first year to settle down and the last year, used to campaign for reelection.

“Leaving only 2 years for effective work. We should consider 5 years per term”, he argued.

Mr Dumelo said so far, it is Ghana and Nigerian in Africa, that still elect their leaders for a four year period.

To this end, the politician and farmer yesterday started an intense advocacy for increase in presidential term for Ghana and Nigeria from four to five years.

Mr Dumelo took to his social media handle to initiate the discussion but his followers have vehemently rejected it.

“4 years is not enough for ANY President/Gov to function effectively. The first year is used to settle down in the office and the last year for campaign, leaving only 2 years for effective work. We should consider 5 years per term”, he said.

Indeed, this is not the fact time the topic is being issued. In the past, former President Joh nKufuor raised but it was shut down.
